Balloon man
This is a story of a man who once wished that he could jump up to the sky, and in a way he made it possible but instead of jumping Mr. Couch travelled in the clouds using nothing but balloons and his favorite garden chair, he strapped 105 helium filled balloons to his chair and strapped on 4 plastic bags full with water to act as a counter balance. The next thing for him to do was to just sit there and get ready to float away.
Mr. Couch the 47 year old from Oregon US was heading for the neighboring state of Idaho, but nearly nine hours later he came back down to earth in a farmers field a little short of his destination but 193 miles away from his home. Friends and family followed him bellow in cars as he zoomed along at 25mph, if asked is he would make another trip he said 'i am not saying i wont do it again, but its up to my wife to decide'
There's something about this story which makes me smile, how many times do we see people just floating in the sky with a number of balloons, never.... to me this story is mad but at the same time its something i would love to do myself, would you?
DBILLY (Street artist, Brooklyn)
DBILLY is a street artist from Brooklyn, this work is made with balloons which is a medium you don't usually consider a street artist to use simply because its not so permanent. this is his first work in which he used balloons in order to show words.
Jason Hackenwerth
Jason Hackenwerth used to make balloon kittens and dogs but now he has changed his skill into and art form, he uses nothing but his lungs to inflate his large-scale installations, he turns the balloons into magestic compositions that look part alien and part underwater life. Despite there grandiose size, the pieces are light, they are intimidating as mesmerizing. his works highlight their fragility as well as heightening their dramatic effect without going over the top.
Here are a few images from his exhibitions:

Balloon Tank (Inges Idee, Hans Hemmert, Germany 2007)
Many people decide to do things differently when it comes to the art world, they use unusual mediums, techniques, context. A medium like balloons more people are using them within there artworks and exhibition they give a sense of life, something temporary that can seem beautiful at the start but then slowly they start to shrink and deflate, a transience of time.
The work of art in particular i am talking about comes from a group of German artists Inges Idee (Art in public space) in particular the artist Hans Hemmert, in 2007 he produced a life size model of a ww1 tank (German Panther) it is accurate and colourful, it is funny to think what we are capable or producing with some rubber and air.
Here are some pictures of the work, and there is a link along the side to see the full set of photos from its prime, to its deflation.

Martin Creed
Martin Creed is a main influence on our exhibition idea, he believes that art and exhibition should not be taken to seriously, he creates works of art that are different and yet simple.
Martins Creed names his work with numbers and a clear description of what it is we are looking at, in particular we have looked at his work in which he fills spaces with balloons that counter for half the spaces air amount that has been calculated to fit in the room. He has carried on filling spaces with balloons over the years using different colours and a varying size in room and places. The visitors wade through the work of art carefully trying not to pop it, it is unpredictable and playful. Throughout his installations he is constantly making us aware of our surroundings, he is asking himself 'what can i do'.
This is very interesting and different its new, its filling a negative space with a negative space, this is something me and freya were interested in looking at, its something that we think is bot challenging and different, so we came up with the idea to release balloons into a negative space which to us is not always an empty room its the very thing that surrounds us, its the air the negative space that is the sky and in particular the skyline of London. We want to emit colour into the sky by using these balloons, so that people can look up and see something filling the sky.
Here are a few pictures of Martin Creeds work that are all part of the series 'half the air in a given space':

99 Balloons Go By......
Concept for exhibition:
Me and Freya have had the idea to release some colour into the London skyline, we will be doing this by releasing balloons in a certain place within London, we have thought about where this will take place and when. Chelsea college of art and design has a courtyard which is central within London and visible to the public, on the 21st of january at 1pm 2011 wherever you are in london look up!!
We first had the idea to put colour into london by filling a space with balloons, but we thought that we would do something a bit different, for us an exhibition is not necessairily something that has to be in a indoor space, it doesnt have to be perminant or temporary, it can be something that just dissapears within time never to be seen again, we are challenging the term given to exhibition. we are giving London colour by releasing the balloons outside and leaving people to watch and see as they hopefully travel across the London skyline.
On each balloon there will be a postcard in which we will write to people explaining our exhibition and for them to hopefully write back, telling us where the postcard reached. This will give us an idea of how far the balloons have gone from the starting point and it is also giving us something back from what we are giving to London.
